Bohemia, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) president Anthony Felicio, Jr., hosted a ‘Welcome Back’ dinner reception for new teachers and more than 50 veteran teachers at the Irish Coffee Pub on October 4th.

12th Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony Hosted

Bohemia, NY --- On Tuesday, May 15th, members of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) Scholarship committee hosted a reception and presented awards to the winners of the 2018 annual essay contest. Held at the colorfully decorated library at Connetquot High School, CTA Vice-President Chris Dolce and CTA committee members welcomed the selected students, their parents and the teachers who made a difference in their lives. Each of the six winning students received an attractive certificate, a copy of their winning essay, and a check for $500.

Bohemia, NY --- On Friday, October 13th Anthony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connequot Teachers Association (CTA), hosted a ‘Welcome Back’ Dinner Reception for new teachers, as well as over 100 veteran teachers. Lombardi’s on the Bay was the venue for this year’s event, as veterans welcomed their new colleagues who will be teaching in the district’s 10 school buildings.

Suffolk County Bar Association Dinner

Bohemia, NY --- On March 2nd the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) was honored at the Cohalan Cares for Kids dinner, hosted by the Suffolk County Bar Association in Hauppauge. CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr. and members of the association’s executive board were on hand for this special recognition. Representing the membership of the CTA Felicio accepted the award for the association’s consistent support of the Suffolk County Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip.

Bohemia, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., working with Mrs. Beth Albert, arranged for a very special visit by a number of little friends who would bring ‘comfort and joy’ to the faculty and staff of Connetquot High School! Felicio arranged for the BideAwee Pet Adoption Center of Wantagh, to bring a few friends to visit the staff, and collect a $200 donation by the CTA to support the important work of the organization.

Connetquot High School Teacher Earns Excellence Award

Bohemia, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., recently announced the selection of Connetquot High School Social Studies teacher Charles Trupia as a ‘Teacher of Excellence’ by New York State Senator Phil Boyle. Fifteen outstanding educators, from schools located in the 4th NYS Senate District, were honored at a ceremony held on May 5th at the Bay Shore Fire Department.

Bohemia, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., was delighted to announce at the organization’s October 13th meeting, that the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Association had recently commended the organization, again, for its community service! Peter Verdon, Regional Staff Director of NYSUT, attended the October 13th meeting to congratulate Felicio, and the entire organization, and present the awards. This is the third consecutive year that NYSUT has singled out Connetquot teachers for their outstanding contributions to the community.

Sayville, NY --- Lands End Caterers hosted the 2015 Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) Retirement dinner on Tuesday, June 16th. Eighteen professional, dedicated, educators were recognized, and commended, for their years of service to the children of the Connetquot Central School District. Attends CRTA Luncheon

Tony Felicio Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association attended the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association luncheon on Tuesday, May 12th. Tony spoke to the Connetquot retirees about the current climate in education, the Governor’s budget, and the negative effects it is having on students, parents, teachers, and public education as a whole. Tony stated, “It is always nice to be invited to the CRTA luncheon and see colleagues from the past. Talking to them and hearing their stories is always very interesting.”

New York State Master Teacher

Bohemia, NY --- The Connetquot Teachers Association would like to congratulate Ms. Jessica Conrad on being named a New York State Master Teacher. Ms. Conrad is a Connetquot High School Earth Science teacher, and one of only 70 Master Teachers selected on Long Island since the program was created in 2013. Ms. Conrad joins Connetquot’s Mrs. Stephanie Burns, who was named a NYS Master Teacher in 2014. We are very proud of both Ms. Conrad and Mrs. Burns and proud to call them our colleagues.

To Testify At NYS Assembly 'Education Reform'

Ronkonkoma, NY --- On Thursday, October 10th, Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., was invited to speak at an ‘Educational Forum’ sponsored by New York State Assemblyman Al Graf at Suffolk Community College, in Brentwood, NY. According to Assemblyman Graf this forum was to “… take his mission for our children, parents and teachers on the road.” Mr. Graf went on to say that “… for those of you who feel you were short-changed by Senator Flangan you will have YOUR say NOW!” The assemblyman asked that parents of children affected by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) also send personal testimony to his district office.

Bohemia, NY --- On September 10th, at its Board of Director’s meeting, the Connetquot Teachers Association presented an award to Rich Thomas, a long time teacher member of the Association and outgoing Insurance Ombudsman. President, Tony Felicio, Jr. of the CTA read the following, “In recognition of your many years of service to the CTA and its membership, and your tireless efforts in support of Union causes, on this day, September 10, 2013, we give you this award.” The entire organization thanks Rich for his service and wishes him well now that he is officially fully retired.

Visits With Current Students

Ronkonkoma, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association President Anthony Felicio, Jr., recently congratulated Foreign language teacher Vanessa Flowers on her choice of a visiting guest speaker. On March 23rd Vanessa welcomed an FBI Special Agent from the NYC office, who is also a Connetquot graduate. This Special Agent agreed to talk to her students about the importance of speaking a foreign language in today’s world.

From The Heart – Thank You Dinner

Bohemia, NY – Connetquot Teachers Association President Anthony Felicio, Jr., recently attended an event organized by the administration, staff and PTA of the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in Bohemia, NY. A very special ‘From the Heart’ dinner was arranged by Bosti Principal Dr. Lisa Ihne for families of that community, to thank them for all they do for the students. Connetquot teachers volunteered to prepare and serve dinner, beverages and dessert for the March 5th event.

Connetquot Conservation Club Receives Grant

Bohemia, NY --- The Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children has awarded science teacher Ms. Forgione with a $250 grant towards the Grey Squirrel Nesting Box Project. The Animal Conservation Club will use this money to build up to ten grey squirrel houses. The idea for the grant came from Christian DeRusso, a member of the club who wanted to build nesting boxes to be placed in a nature center.

Connetquot Annual Professional Performance Review Accepted By NYS Education Department

Ronkonkoma, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., is pleased to announce that the Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) between the Connetquot Central School District and the Connetquot Teachers Association has been accepted in its entirety by the New York State Education Department. Felicio said “Through many hours of hard work, mutual respect, negotiation, and the unending desire to formulate an APPR that improves student learning and is fair to teachers, we are proud of our combined efforts.”

CTA President Attends RC21 Teachers Retirement Luncheon

Ronkonkoma, NY --- On Tuesday, December 11th, Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., was invited to attend the annual RC211 Teachers Retirement luncheon which was held at the Westlake Inn, Patchogue. RC21 President Joan Perrini welcomed the assembled retirees from the Bay Shore, Bayport/Bluepoint, Brentwood, Central Islip, Connetquot, East Islip, Hauppauge, Islip, Sayville and West Islip school districts. The guest speaker for the luncheon was Lee Cutler, New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Secretary-Treasurer.

Bohemia, NY --- On December 4, 2012, Connetquot High School hosted a luncheon for Asheesh Misra, who represents the International Baccalaureate Organization. His assignment is to help us through the difficult authorization process. The International Baccalaureate was founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 as a non-profit educational foundation. There are 1,400 IB World Schools in the United States, and Rockville Centre, Garden City, Commack, Northport, Bay Shore, Long Beach, Hauppauge and West Islip are among them. Next year, Connetquot hopes to join that prestigious list.

Connetquot Teachers Join Community Agencies
To Provide Hurricane Relief

Ronkonkoma, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) members have joined forces with members of the district’s communities to provide relief to those who have suffered at the hands of recent heavy winds, rain and coastal flooding. CTA President Mr. Tony Felicio, Jr., has called for the support of his members to provide tangible resources, as well as volunteers with construction, and demolition, skills to make themselves available.

Connetquot teachers and staff volunteered to serve dinner, provided by the Applebees Restaurant chain, on November 15th at the Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School.

Approximately 70 teachers attended to offer their congratulations and support to our newest colleagues. Tony Felicio, Jr., President of the CTA, stated, “We would like to welcome you to our Association and to the Connetquot School District. We look forward to working together for years to come. You have joined an exceptional group of educators who are willing and able to assist you in your professional development. Never hesitate to ask.”

Connetquot Teachers Involved With Political Action

Connetquot teachers responded to the call for help to make calls from the NYSUT Regional Office in Hauppauge this past week for Candidate Rich Montano (State Senate candidate) and for Tim Bishop who is running for re-election to Congress in the 1st Congressional District. Connetquot Teachers Association was well represented, having 29 of its members in attendance making hundreds of phone calls to fellow NYSUT members, reminding them of the importance of voting and supporting those candidates who have stood up and supported us.

October 15, 2012 --- This past weekend, six members from the Connetquot Teacher Association’s Board of Directors attended a two day workshop at Gurney’s Inn in Montauk, NY. Some of the workshops included: How to Be A Better Building Representative, Negotiations During Difficult Times, and Strengthening and Mobilizing Locals Strategically. In addition to these informative workshops, our representatives were able to network with colleagues from other locals where they were able to discuss mutual concerns and share strategies in dealing with the many issues facing educators in today’s world.
Tony Felicio, Jr., President of the CTA stated,”on behalf of the entire membership, I would like to thank those who gave up their weekend, time with family, and other personal obligations to attend the Gurney’s workshop. The information gathered and brought back to the Association helps us all and makes us a stronger organization.”

September 19, 2012 --- Tony Felicio, Jr., CTA President is seen here with Marilyn Aitken, CRTA President at the September luncheon for Connetquot’s Retiree Association. The CRTA has always invited the current in-service president to attend their luncheons and give an update as to the affairs of the Association. Tony spoke briefly to the retirees in attendance stating, “it is always an honor to attend your luncheons. It is the Association’s goal to ensure that our current members never forget the many sacrifices, struggles, and unionism of our retirees, who laid the ground work for what we today enjoy as teachers here in Connetquot.”
The CRTA has representatives on our Board of Directors who attend our monthly meetings as well as takes on a huge roll with political action, vote-cope, support of our budget, and helping to run our own elections every two years. Our thanks goes out to them for all they have done for us during their in-service years and continue to do now in retirement.

Their Brothers and Sisters

Bohemia, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association president, Tony Felicio, Jr. along with members of the Association wore red shirts on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 to show their support to the members of the Chicago Teachers Association who are out on strike. Tony said, “at a time when teachers across this nation are being made to be the scapegoats for all that troubles our nation, it is more important then ever, to show our support for our brothers and sisters in these difficult times.” Many teachers throughout the district answered the call and on very short notice came to school dressed in red.

Ronkonkoma, NY --- At a festive June 19th dinner, held at the Lands End Restaurant in Sayville, NY, 13 Connetquot School District teachers were honored for their dedicated service to the children of the community. Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., used this opportunity to recognize the service of the district’s retiring teachers.

Connetquot Coach Bill Santoro Inducted To
National Wrestling Hall of Fame

Ronkonkoma, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association President Anthony Felicio, Jr., recently met with retired Connetquot teacher Bill Santoro to offer congratulations on his April 27th induction to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, which is located in Stillwater, Oklahoma. As a former wrestling assistant to Coach Bill Santoro, Felicio has great respect for his dedication to his students, and athletes. Santoro ranks #1 in seniority among Suffolk County wrestling coaches having completed 34 consecutive years as Connetquot’s varsity coach.

Harvard Club of L.I. Names Two From Connetquot as Distinguished Teachers

Ronkonkoma, NY --- Judith B. Esterquest, Treasurer of the Harvard Club of Long Island (HCLI), recently notified two of Connetquot’s senior teachers that they had been named Distinguished Teachers by the HCLI. Mrs. Janice Fisher (Connetquot HS) and Mrs. Mary McGonnell (Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School) were two of only 12 teachers selected from among the professional staff of 125 school districts on Long Island!

Ronkonkoma Middle School Teachers Host RG-Games For Tyler

Ronkonkoma, NY --- On Friday night, March 16th, Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) teachers and 6th grade students joined forces from 7:00-9:00 PM to confirm their belief that ‘Ty Will Win’ his battle against Hodgekins. Tyler Ponzio, who attended RMS, is now a 9th grade student at Connetquot High School. According to RMS Athletic Director Ms. Dee Kirwin “ … our Recreational Games for Ty (RGFT) was attended by 43 sixth grade students, and teachers, for a night of fun and games. Students participated in games of Basketball, Four Square, Volleyball and BINGO, renamed TYLER, and lettered accordingly!” Mrs. Mongiello, another teacher-volunteer said that the “… kids had a blast, won great prizes, and helped Ty and his family during a very difficult time.”

Arthur Prem Teachers Develop Super Bowl Activities for Their Students

Oakdale, NY --- On February 2nd, CTA President Tony Felicio, Jr., had the opportunity to take in the Super Bowl festivities at the Arthur Premm Alternative pre-school. The program, designed by Premm’s veteran teachers, involved developing fine motor skills, as well as stretching, exercise, passing, running and ‘TD Celebration’ skills!

Connetquot Teachers Association Commends
Ronkonkoma Middle School Teachers

Anthony Felicio, President of the Connetquot Teachers Association, recently congratulated a group of Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) teachers who worked with their students to complete a project that would continue the fight to end the scourge of bullying. The RMS Anti-Bullying Task Force developed a project where students in grades 6-8 could use their writing and, or, art skills to express how they feel about bullying. Entries were carefully reviewed by members of the task force and several were chosen to be reproduced on an Anti-Bullying quilt.

Suzanne Neske One of Four Finalists for New
York State Teacher of the Year Award

CTA President, Tony Felicio, Jr., proudly announced that High School English teacher Suzanne Neske was one of four finalists for New York State Teacher of the Year Award. An interview with Ms. Neske revealed that she was one of the four finalists from an original pool of over 1000 candidates. Her selection as a finalist was made by a panel that included New York State Education, NYSUT, former Teacher of the Year winners, parent and principal members. The application process required approximately two months of work which included several essays regarding her educational idealology. She also traveled to Albany where she interviewed with several panels. "The process was well worth it and I am proud that I was able to represent the District and Connetquot Community in such a positive way." Tony Felicio added, "The Association is proud of Ms. Neske's accomplishments and is pleased that she received the recognition that she deserves."

The Connetquot Teachers Association has always endorsed professional and respectful treatment of colleagues, whether be a teacher, administrator, central office personnel or any other staff member in the District. It has encouraged its members to bestow this belief on the students they teach on a daily basis. The Association has also emphatically communicated to the District that it will not tolerate its members being treated in anything less than a professional and respected manner by those who supervise and administrate in the District.

In an effort to enforce this belief, the Association has recently addressed an ongoing issue with an administrator in the District. NEW CITIZEN – TEACHER!

The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) recently congratulated one of the organization’s newest members on achieving a life-long dream: of becoming an American citizen! Elena Vladimirovna Kushins, born in the Bashkortostan Republic of Russia, began this school year as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher at Connetquot’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in Ronkonkoma. On November 8th, 2010, Ms. Kushins took the Federal Oath of Allegiance, and became a naturalized American citizen!

Connetquot Teachers Association Hosts Third Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony for Essay
Contest Winners

The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA), hosted an awards ceremony at the organization’s headquarters on May 7th to honor six Connetquot High School seniors. Ms. Nancy Dunlop (CTA Coordinator of Community Advocacy) and Ms. Beth Albert presented certificates and $500 scholarships to each of the six students for their winning essays.

For the third year, all Connetquot High School seniors were eligible to submit a 250 word essay on the topic The Teacher Who Made A Difference In My Life. Close to 100 essays were submitted, read and graded without the student’s name written on that essay. Each essay was assigned a number and when the winning essays were selected the names would be revealed.

The following student essay winners were selected, and invited to attend the award ceremony along with their family and the teachers who were the focus of those essays. Matthew Marion wrote his essay about teacher Brad Drinkwater. Stephenie Guercio believes Debbie Molinari made a difference in her life. Caissa Kunins wrote about Mauricio Arias, while Briana Young singled out Justin Drzal. Jane Farino credits Janice Fischer for being such a positive influence.

Connetquot Teachers Association Supports Connetquot Cobras Baseball Program

Coach Patrick Brennan of the Connetquot Cobras baseball team recently contacted Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) with an update on his team's current record. Brennan was proud to be able to report that his team of 7th, 8th and 9th grade student athletes is 8-0, undefeated, and sitting atop the standings. The Cobras are a travel team of community youngsters and the CTA helps to financially support them.

Connetquot High School teacher Nancy Dunlop has announced another successful conclusion to the Daffodil Days fundraising effort. According to Mrs. Dunlop the District raised $3500.00 for the American Cancer Society through the Daffodil Days promotion. This effort represents the largest monies raised by any district in Suffolk County. In addition to the generous sales of daffodils, Mrs. Dunlop was please to add that 16 community members also purchased 'Gifts of Hope.' These $25.00 donations afforded for the delivery of flowers and teddy bears directly to cancer patients in area hospitals

Warm Hearts - Warm Hands

Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) announced the successful conclusion to the 2008 effort to collect gloves, hats and scarves for the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Courthouse. “Again, motivated by the wonderful organization and dedication of Kristine Abbinanti the CTA was able to deliver over 500 hats, mittens, scarves and socks today.” Abbinanti is a 5th grade teacher at the Cherokee Street School, and the catalyst for this worthwhile event.

Connetquot Teachers Host Volleyball Fundraiser to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

On October 15, 2008 Justin Hertz, Connetquot’s Girls’ Volleyball Coach, and Physical Education teacher at Ronkonkoma Middle School, had his team take to the court against rival West Islip High School as part of the ‘Dig Pink’ fundraiser in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Justin’s team was up to the challenge, and raised $2,500 while defeating the visitors in the first three matches.

Connetquot Educators Honored by State Senator Caesar Trunzo

The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) was recently notified that three members of the association had been singled out by Senator Caesar Trunzo (R-Brentwood) as outstanding teachers. As part of the National Teacher Day celebration Trunzo awarded Certificates of Appreciation to Ms. Jane Murphy (Edith L. Slocum School), Ms. Carol Pustay (Idle Hour School) and Mrs. Agnes Gaeta (District Mentor - Connetquot HS).

Mr. Charles Trupia to be Honored by University at Albany

Charlie Trupia has been teaching Social Studies in the Connetquot School District for 23 years, and the impact he’s had on his students has always been apparent. Outside the classroom his work with students in the Habitat for Humanity Club has helped generate thousands of dollars in donations for that organization. This year alone, along with co-advisor Jason Willans, Trupia has helped donate $18,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County. Recently Trupia was contacted by the Director of the Honors College at the University at Albany.

Connetquot Teachers Association Congratulates Spanish Language Teacher Cheryl Sosa

The Connetquot Teachers Association was recently notified that Spanish language teacher Ms. Cheryl Sosa had been honored on March 28th by the Spanish Embassy. At a special ceremony in NYC, sponsored by the Ministry Education of the Spanish Embassy, Ms. Sosa was awarded an academic scholarship to study at a Spanish University during the month of July. This financial award will pay the cost of tuition, room and board during her time in Spain.

Association Recognized for Commitment to Health and Safety for Students and Staff

Connetquot Teachers Association Recognized in the Fight Against Cancer

Mrs. Anne K. Thorsen, Senior Director of Income Development for the American Cancer Society, visited with the Executive Board of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) on April 8th. Thorsen stopped by the Ronkonkoma office of the CTA to present a plaque, and express her gratitude, to the members of the organization for this year's effort to fight cancer. The CTA effort raised $4,000 this year as part of the ACS annual Daffodil Days program.

Connetquot Teachers Spearhead The Fight Against Cancer

For the past several years Connetquot Teachers have joined forces and collected money for cancer research by selling daffodils. Again this year, an effort spearheaded by Connetquot Teachers Association Coordinator of Community Advocacy, Nancy Dunlop brought together teachers, secretaries, AP's, Food Service Workers, Central Office personnel and retirees to raise more than $4,000 for the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Connetquot teachers fed more than 600 poor and homeless adults and children at 'Every Child's Dream' Holiday Celebration held at St. Lawrence the Martyr auditorium on December 19th.

Bohemia, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr. invited Erik Zalewski (MS, EMT-CC) to meet with district teachers on February 8th. Zalewski is a veteran paramedic affiliated with the Emergency Care & Safety Institute, National Safety Council and the American Heart Association. Felicio invited Zalewski to work with district educators on the use of Narcan, which is used to reverse opioid overdoses.

Working with Cohalan Children’s Center supervisor Jacqueline Dwyer and program aide Kathleen Meade, the CTA ‘adopted’ two local families and dropped off toys, games, books, clothes and gift cards for those needy families. Additionally, the CTA dropped off boxes of clothes, toys and books for use at the Children’s Center.

'Make Strides Against Breast Cancer'

Bohemia, NY --- The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) was once again well-represented at the 2015 ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ Walk at the Brookhaven campus of Dowling College on a cool and overcast Sunday morning, October 4th. Coordinated by CTA members Joanna Zalewski, Lisa Manzo and CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr., teachers, parents and students representing the CTA were among the estimated 10,000 walkers determined to help in the fight against breast cancer.

Many people have asked, "How much is Common Core costing the district?" It is very difficult to ascertain the total cost, however the Association FOILED the district regarding the amount that was paid to outside consultants for services dealing with Common Core. The FOIL covered the school year 2014 - 2015. This is only a snippet of the total cost.

Connetquot Teachers Association Meet With Regent Tilles

Bohemia, NY --- On May 27, 2015 the Connetquot Teachers Association had the opportunity to meet, ask questions, and share concerns with Regent Tilles regarding the current education environment. Discussed was the recent hiring of the new Commissioner, APPR, high stakes testing, and the hopeful change in direction of the NYSED. The Association appreciated Regent Tilles taking the time to meet and discuss these important issues.

Bohemia, NY --- On Monday evening, May 18th, Mr. Tony Felicio, Jr, President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) hosted a reception and awards ceremony for the winners of the organization’s annual essay contest. Held at the colorfully decorated library at Connetquot High School, Felicio and CTA committee members, welcomed the selected students, their parents and the teachers “… who made a difference …” in their lives. Each of the six winning students received an attractive certificate, a copy of their winning essay, and a check for $500.

Bohemia, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr. welcomed over 500 parents, teachers, administrators, Board of Education Trustees and one district Superintendent to the Sycamore Avenue Elementary School on March 18th. In a community education forum co-sponsored by Connetquot Parents for Education, four influential education leaders shared information, and answered questions, about the current climate in New York State related to public school students and upcoming exams.

Association's Analysis of Teacher State Scores Reveal
They are Unreliable and Invalid

Statistical analyses conducted by the Association on State scores for its 4th to 8th grade teachers (89 teachers total) revealed a number of findings. First, it was determined that the State evaluation scores that Connetquot teachers received were primarily comprised of error.

'Make Strides Against Breast Cancer

Bohemia, NY --- The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) was once again well-represented at the 2014 ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ Walk at the Brookhaven campus of Dowling College on a beautiful Sunday morning, October 5th. Organized by Joanna Zalewski, teachers, spouses, parents and students representing the CTA were among the estimated 10,000 walkers determined to help in the fight against breast cancer.

‘Birthdays In A Box’ Program For Homeless Children

Bohemia, NY --- Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) recently congratulated his membership for their generous support of the ‘Birthdays in a Box’ program. Teachers and students from throughout the district collected gifts, and wrapped boxes to store the donations for 25 children. The organization ‘Birthday Wishes’ arranges birthday parties for homeless children who often feel neglected, and unloved.

Bohemia, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., and the organization’s scholarship committee, welcomed six students and their families to the organization’s May 20th Scholarship Presentation Reception. Held in the high school library, Felicio welcomed the students, their parents, and the teachers singled out by the students.

Connetquot Teachers Association Sends Loud Message To Governor Cuomo And Legislative Leaders

Bohemia, NY --- Members of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA), district parents and supporters of quality public education were among the 3,500 demonstrators who voiced their displeasure of the decisions being made by Governor Andrew Cuomo, and members of the New York State Legislature. Organized by CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr., the April 28th rally at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook, NY, brought together demonstrators from throughout Long Island, NYC, and upstate New York, who voiced their opposition to Governor Cuomo’s “failed education policies”, according to Felicio.

Forces To Support ASPCA

Bohemia, NY --- On Wednesday, December 4th Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., met with 9th grade student Nicole Agrillo and teachers at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS). Ellen Perz and Rob Burger represented the OBMS teachers who coordinated a program to support Nicole Agrillo’s efforts to raise money for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). A check in the amount of $1,070 will be presented to the ASPCA on behalf of Nicole Grillo, and OBMS teachers.

Bohemia, NY --- During the month of November, the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) has made an effort to show it’s appreciation to our local heroes, the volunteer firemen that protects us, and our families. On Saturday, November 23rd, CTA President Tony Felicio, Jr., and several members, took the time to visit the Bohemia and West Sayville firefighters with a ‘thank you’ bagel breakfast, including coffee and ‘fixins’.

Ronkonkoma, NY --- On Friday, November 1st, Connetquot teachers and parents joined hundreds of other education advocates, including administrators and board of education members, at the office of New York State Senator John Flanagan. The purpose of the assembly was to send a clear message to Senator Flanagan that the choices that the State Education Department has made, are unacceptable, and hurting our children.

Bohemia, NY --- Anthony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA), along with Peter Leis, President of the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA), was invited to attend the October 10th Bagels and Books Breakfast at the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip, NY. Felicio was invited to join fellow children’s advocates who have been working together with the Education & Assistance Corporation (EAC). The EAC operates the Childrens Center to provide a safe area for youngsters while their families are involved in court hearings.

'Makes Strides Against Breast Cancer'

Ronkonkoma, NY --- Teachers, spouses, parents and students representing the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) took part in the annual ‘Make Strides Against Breast Cancer’ Walk at the Brookhaven campus of Dowling College, on October 6th. Organized by CTA members Joanna McManaman and Lisa Manzo, the Connetquot contingent was part of the organization’s effort to reach its goal of $1,500 to help fight breast cancer.

STOP IT! FIX IT! OR SCRAP IT!

On Saturday, August 17th, a rally of approximately 2,000 concerned teachers, administrators, Board members, students, and parents was held at Comsewogue High School to denounce the Common Core and the State Education Department’s advocacy and reliance for high stakes testing. Signs declaring, “Our Children are More Than a Test Score,” and “Enemies of Public Education,” were displayed by many in attendance.

Connetquot Teachers Association Attends One Voice United Rally in Albany

Parents, teachers, students and community members from across New York state, including CONNETQUOT TEACHERS ASSOCIATION members, headed to Albany on Saturday, June 8th for a rally against over-testing and underfunding in public education. Local rally-goers took the 3 and a half hour bus trip up to Albany to make their voices heard. Tony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association who was in attendance said, “What a great day to see everyone who is concerned about the future of Public Education together, rallying for more funding and less testing. The day was very inspiring.” Tony also went on to thank those teachers from Connetquot who also took the time to make the journey up to Albany and be a part of the special day.

Ronkonkoma, NY --- On May 22nd Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., packed several shopping bags with brand new children’s books, and stopped by the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. Felicio was again invited to attend the Children’s Center Bagel & Books Breakfast along with other childrens’ advocates who have partnered with the Education and Assistance Corporation (EAC).

The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) has again helped get this season underway by becoming a sponsor, and providing financial support for the league, and the children of the Connetquot School District.

Connetquot Teacher Recognized For
Life Saving Action

Bohemia, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr. recently congratulated the families of Art teacher Erica Martino-Lattuga, and Security Specialist Debbie Billotto, on being recognized by the district’s Board of Education (BOE). Members of the BOE presented certificates to Martino-Lattuga and Billotto at their April 23rd meeting. Their quick thinking, training and reaction, resulted in saving the life of a high school student who had suffered a grand mal seizure during lunch period at Connetquot High School.

Erica Martino-Lattuga and Debbie Billotto were recognized by the Connetquot Board of Education for their life-saving efforts.

Connetquot Teachers Association Hosts Community Fireman 'Thank You' Breakfast

Ronkonkoma, NY --- On Sunday morning, January 13th, members of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) visited the Bohemia, and West Sayville, Fire Departments to provide a ‘Thank You’ breakfast to these dedicated volunteers. Connetquot Teachers Association President Tony Felicio, Jr., has long appreciated the sacrifices of the community’s volunteer firemen, and EMS workers. Through personal experience he has come to value what these selfless individuals do when they receive that ‘emergency’ phone call. But the response of these community volunteers during, and after, Hurricane Sandy took their dedication to another level.

Connetquot Teachers Association Helps Make 7th Annual ‘Every Child's Dream’ A Reality

Ronkonkoma, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., along with several members of the organization, joined with Mr. Ken Mangan for his 7th annual Every Child’s Dream dinner which was held at Sayville HS on December 14th. Mangan, along with over 100 volunteers, hosted a very special night for over 700 invited needy neighbors. During the two dinner sittings guests were served snacks, a nutritious dinner and dessert followed by the opportunity to select from a variety of items collected for their use.

Ronkonkoma, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President, Tony Felicio, Jr., was very pleased for the support of his membership in its latest community service project. Together with the Bohemia Historical Society (BHS), members of the CTA were asked to help replenish the Food Pantry at St. John Nepomucene Church in Bohemia, NY. Together with members of the BHS, Connetquot teachers collected, sorted and delivered a substantial amount of groceries to the Bohemia facility.

Connetquot Teachers Help With Thanksgiving Dinner And Continue Hurricane Recovery Support

Ronkonkoma, NY --- For the weeks that followed the devastation of Hurricane Sandy Connetquot teachers volunteered to help members of the community through the heartache and recovery. Currently there are 20 Connetquot families that have been displaced as a result of the damage to their homes and property, particularly in the Idle Hour area of Oakdale. Members of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) have stepped up to work with student groups, community PTA’s and other volunteer agencies to provide physical, emotional and financial support for the families affected.

For Community Members Afffected By Hurricane

Ronkonkoma, NY --- At a November 13th meeting of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) a motion was introduced, and passed unanimously, to create a $15,000 emergency fund for community members affected by the recent hurricane. According to CTA President Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., “… the organization is joining forces with the entire community to do what we can to relieve some of the pain caused by this recent devastating weather. The CTA is asking that any community family affected, or someone who knows of a family affected, by the recent weather to contact us at 631-676-3061.”

Rallies To Educate NY Now!

Ronkonkoma, NY --- On Thursday afternoon, October 25th, Connetquot teachers and parents took part in a state-wide effort to Educate NY Now! Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Tony Felicio, Jr., organized rallies at four of the district’s 11 schools in an effort to “… demand that our state government fulfills New York’s Constitutional obligation to provide all students with a quality education.” The CTA recently joined Educate NY Now, a coalition that unites parents, students, educators, administrators, unions, school board members, community organizations, civil rights groups and education advocates.

Cohalan Court Complex Childrens Center

Ronkonkoma, NY --- Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Tony Felicio, Jr., recently filled his car with cases of children’s books, healthy snacks, bottled water and fruit juices, tissues and paper towels. He delivered those supplies to the Children’s Center, located at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip, NY. The supplies were donated by members of the Connetquot Teachers Association, and collected by the teachers at the 11 schools within the district.

Bohemia, NY --- Connetquot Teacher Association President, Tony Felicio, Jr. is seen here speaking at a celebratory gathering of school administrators, local dignitaries, parents, local media and students. All gathered to congratulate the Habitat for Humanity Club at Connetquot High School under the advisement of Mr. Jason Wilans, special education teacher at the High School for its outstanding contribution to the community. Tony spent time during the year assisting on a job site helping to put up the walls to a new house. Tony stated, “it was very gratifying, working along side my teacher colleagues, the many students who participated in the build, as well as the family who was to live in the house. To see the passion and commitment on everyone's face to get the job done was tremendous.” Felicio also went on to say, “if you have never experienced working on a build with Habitat, you should consider volunteering a little time to do so. Not only are you giving back to the community and helping others, but the experience is personally, very rewarding.”
Congratulations to Mr. Wilans and to all of the students and teachers who took part in this very worthy cause.
